CARTER THOMAS GORDON
Full Name: Carter Thomas Gordon Nicknames: Just Carter - he likes to tell people his middle name is Tiberius Date of Birth: January 1, 1953 Hometown: Seattle, Washington, USA Education: Former Ravenclaw, Class of 1971 Blood Status: Muggleborn Occupation: Inspector; Department of Magical Law Enforcement Employer: Ministry of Magic Wand Type: Whitepine with dragon heartstring |
APPEARANCE
Hair:
Though it used to be a messy brown mop that his mom would threaten to cut in his sleep, more often now his hair is kept short - easy maintenance. It still gets moppish from time to time.
Eyes:
Carter has plain brown eyes that do not really speak so much to his character. They are rather inexpressive, even at the most expressive of times. Some people speak with their eyes, but Carter mostly speaks with his mouth; finding it easier, less confusing and less interpretive. They always carry about them a sort of serious weight.
Height:
Carter is tall and skinny. He is not particularly muscular or well-defined, but he does enjoy athletics. His skin is decently pale as he spends the whole year in rather overcast, shady climates. He is not so pale nor so skinny as to appear unhealthy.
Style:
Though he can be forced to dress up on occasion, Carter is more of a fan of jeans, sweaters and his shoes are often scuffed with something - this, that or the other. It is not that he is a particularly messy person, but he has no overwhelming desire to worry about style.
Etc.:
To pass Carter by in a group of people you would probably not pick him out from the others, save his height, which puts his head far above the rest. He is the kind of guy that you may not notice the first time around, but perhaps on the second or third he will catch your attention. Carter is often seen with friends and seldom ever finds time alone, though he prefers it this way. The look about him is generally friendly and inviting and despite his best efforts otherwise, he is a rather sociable person. He can come off rather stiff if he is uncomfortable with those he does not know well, but he handles formal, professional situations with a certain grace and ease that has to be natural and unpracticed.
PERSONALITY
Erised:
Continue a successful career within the Ministry of Magic; meet the right girl and (eventually) give his mother some of those grandchildren she's always going on about.
Dementor:
A particularly difficult call he responded to as an auror near the end of the war - an attack on a pre-school near Kent where there was a mixture of muggle children and children of wizarding families. The attack was blamed on a gas-leak, the source of many of the problems during the height of the war. The woman who was the teacher was a familiar face from his Hogwarts days. There were no survivors.
Patronus:
Carter's first night in Ravenclaw house which was spent up all night, getting to know his housemates and learning all about the magical world. Every year he was at school, Ravenclaw had a lovely Beginning of the Year party which started after the opening feast and was organized almost entirely by Carter so that he could facilitate the same experience for younger students.
Boggart:
The death of his parents at his hand; Though Carter knows better, since he discovered his magical abilities he has always been afraid that the anger he possesses toward them may be his own undoing.
Likes:
Girls, work, music, going to concerts, hanging out with friends, money - mostly having it and spending it, going to parties, quidditch matches, flying, school and studies, the muggle world, magic, television, movies, his family home in Seattle, rain, the woods, camping.
Dislikes:
Unnecessary arrogance, ignorance, gratuitious violence, flip flop shoes, doing laundry, being treated like a child by his parents, girls who want to change him or think they know what is best for him, his parents thinking they know what is best for him, stuck up wizards.
Basic Personality:
Carter is irritatingly charming when he wants to be - a trait his mother claims he learned from his father. He also knows how to get what he wants from anyone and everyone, including his parents. Without a distinct plan or goal, Carter becomes totally uninspired and unmotivated. Outside of his aspirations for social success, he rarely focuses on anything else - and that includes his own happiness. For the most part though, Carter is great at talking with people; he's very personable and knows how to assert himself appropriately in a professional situation.
At the core, Carter is a good person who simply means well and just aspires for a better life. Though he may occasionally waver and offer someone significant doubt, he is a good person who will make the right decisions in the end. Carter is an endless source of understanding. He is an excellent listener who tries his best to look at a problem from all sides and all angles. There is very little he would be able to say to a person who presented a logical, well thought out problem or issue to him. If nothing Carter is patient. He will wait for anything, everything and more importantly anyone. Everything about his attitude is casual and laid back. He is unassuming and untoward.

Biography:
Carter was born to his parents and their decent living. His father is a muggle lawyer who champions the law and the courtroom. His mother stays at home and takes care of the house and as a youngster, Carter. To some degree this time together brought mother and son closer, but they still have their issues. As Carter comes closer and closer to adulthood, his mother worries about his safety and his knowledge. She cares little for the Outstanding grades he has received in all of his classes and even less for the studious house of students he has been placed into for the last six years. His muggle background has been somewhat of a hindrance and still plagues him to this day as he stumbles through an existence in the wizarding world.
Before his acceptance to Hogwarts his parents knew nothing of the magical world nor Carter's powers, though Carter had always suspected there was something different or special. He cannot remember any specific instances where the magic was particularly effective, but he always had the feeling. At Hogwarts Carter felt more at home, meeting many new people from all over the world and being a whole ocean away from his mother. As his time at the school passed he slowly relaxed into being more sociable and friendly. Summers at home were spent nose to the grindstone, his parents determined that he should still have a 'proper' education. He received his high school diploma early, graduating late Summer, 1971.
His adolescent summers were spint abroad - his mother, the homemaker preferring travel to sitting around at home. Her favorite location being the Ruzzo Winery nestled in Tuscany, Italy. He got on well with the proprietor's son - Nicollo, who is still his friend today. Along with Nicollo's little sisters, Isabella and Mya they would get into all kinds of trouble in the vines. There was never a happier group of people drinking wine than Francesco, Natalia, Richard and Matilda. Imagine his shock during the sorting ceremony of his seventh year when a young, plucky Izzy Ruzzo plopped down on the stool at the front of the Great Hall and was sorted into his house. Now that they know of their shared interests, there two families are closer than ever before.
Even though his time at Hogwarts was nearly at an end and the magical world offered many job opportunities, it was Carter's parent's wish that he attend muggle college and earn an 'acceptable' degree for a 'real' job. Though they have never said so, Carter suspects that his parents believe the wizarding world and it's inhabitants to be sort of juvenile and certainly not something that Carter would entertain for the rest of his life. Upon his graduation from Hogwarts, he applied simultaneously to schools in England so that he would not have to return to Seattle. Coupled with a generous donation, his application to Oxford was accepted.
He failed out after his first semester; unable to attend largely due to the fact that the hours conflicted with the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Law Enforcement's Junior Inspector training program. His mentor within the DMLE, a cross man named Watson was eager to see him advance to the rank of Inspector - a title which took him a year to obtain and which he held for three years before applying to the Auror program.
Just months after being instilled into the auror program, he was one of the first to report to the scene during the Battle of Hogsmeade, getting caught up quickly in the frantic state of things on the path that the carriages took down to the small town. He was injured trying to defend students and families retreating from the path back to Hogwarts. His injuries were rather severe, scarring darkly his face, neck, arm and shoulder in the process. He was forced to continue care for the better part of a year. The worst of the discoloration has fixed itself and the scars on his face have been treated, but his shoulder, arm and back still show signs of the attack.
As a rather green auror, he enjoyed the work and his colleagues within the Ministry of Magic. His parents had even come to somewhat, accept their son's role in the magical community. They would visit every so often and with his father's impending retirement, for longer periods during the summer at the Ruzzo Estates. He spent the majority of his time working, eagerly trying to achieve and advance within his job title. He was motivated by the looming dangers and got to work closely on a daily basis with accomplished wizards like the Prewett brothers. He was a member of the team lead by Gideon Prewett.
Hands rather tied by the Ministry, there was only so much he could do in the role as an auror and to some degree was left feeling helpless; they could only show up after an attack had taken place or once one had already started. One evening in particular, after responding to a terrible call at a pre-school, Gideon Prewett stared speaking to him facetiously about being able to do more. The conversation was never continued; Gideon was killed. Soon after, the war was over and Carter was still a soldier, but without a fight. He transferred back into the Department of Magical Law Enforcement's Inspector ranks, where he works in a detective capacity, working a combination of Homicides and Cold Cases.
