REMUS JOHN LUPIN
Full Name: Remus John Lupin Nicknames: Moony Date of Birth: 10 March 1960 Hometown: Glastonbury, England Parents' Names: John (deceased) and Mary Lupin Other Family: N/A Blood Status: Half-Blood Occupation: Unemployed Wand Type: 12 ½”, Chestnut, with Unicorn Tail Hair Core |
APPEARANCE
Hair:
A light brown shaggy mop that is often mussed when he nervously runs his hand through his hair.
Eyes:
Hazel
Height:
5 ft 11 in (180 cm)
Style:
Unable to hold down a steady job, Remus appears to lack any sense of style with the limited wardrobe pieces he owns. His jumpers, t-shirts, and trousers either have holes in them or are poorly patched and he has a large collection of plaid button downs that shouldn't be owned by anyone other than Muggle maths teachers.
Etc.:
People often underestimate Remus Lupin. They think that because he is quiet and gets sick all the time, that he is meek or could easily get pushed around. The bags under his eyes that sit dark on his pale face only prove a poor night's sleep, which he has often enough for them to be semi-permanent. His haggard appearance, even when he's cleanly shaven and wearing a clean outfit, make him easy to over look. Nothing fits him right and usually his clothes just hang off of him. But even this worn appearance can’t hide the fact that he always has a friendly smile and warm eyes. He is often nervous in stressful situations and attempts to hide it by mussing up his hair with an innocent head scratch or a rub at the base of his neck. His nails are always chewed down to the skin and there are bits of skin around his nail that have begun to bleed when he gets overzealous.
PERSONALITY
Erised:
Most of his desires are realized with the end of the war and it will be difficult to try and live a life with normal desires and goals that might be found in a mirror.
Dementor:
The night he discovered who attacked him as a boy.
Patronus:
The first date he went on with Marlene. He was so nervous and managed to ruin everything in the end, but for that night everything was perfect and there wasn’t the baggage of every fight and heartbreak that had come before like the subsequent first dates.
Boggart:
The moon
Likes:
reading classic literature (except for Dickens), getting to see Harry, music from the turn of the 20th century (big-band, jazz, and swing), classes (especially Defense Against the Dark Arts), Quidditch, chocolate, a strong drink with his friends, and flying
Disikes:
Confrontations, Potions, modern music, messes, broccoli, and Charles Dickens novels
Basic Personality:
Above all, Remus is loyal. It might not always seem that way and he often pushes someone away because he is trying to protect them, but, at his core, everything Remus does is for the benefit of someone else. He once worked hard for his grades, but never to the point he sacrifices a bit of fun and has caused as much trouble at James and Sirius in the past. They are far superior, but Remus isn't without his honorable mentions. He attempts to be more mature than his friends, yet he still can't stop a chuckle whenever Sirius let's out a loud belch during a round of drinks.
BIOGRAPHY
His years at Hogwarts were his happiest. He met James Potter and Sirius Black on the train, both having bonded before they even found a compartment – Remus’ compartment. They were loud, boisterous boys, attracting the attention of another round-faced boy – Peter Pettigrew. Remus would have never expected to call these boys friends, felt that they were all fairly different, but time proved that would never be the case. They were nearly inseparable from that first Welcoming Feast to Graduation and really past that to those short years that would follow graduating from Hogwarts.
The boys that Remus assumed he would have nothing in common with were the first people to learn of his secret. He had always been a secretive boy, knew what was at risk if anyone found out he was a werewolf, and when they told him that they had noticed the dates coincided with the moon he feared the worst. But the boys never rejected him, made the insane and wonderful gesture to become animagus so he would never be alone on those full moons. Remus never realized how alone he had been, how completely and truly awful it had been and the want to never be alone again.
Life outside of Hogwarts was a little more difficult, which was impressive considering it is a universal truth that there’s nothing worse than being a teenager. Finding a job that could work with a werewolf’s schedule was near impossible and a schedule that could be so flexible for secret meetings and unexplained visits to the hospital didn’t seem to exist. Remus lost his last permanent job in the spring of 1980, only he didn’t try to find another job. If Sirius knew of an extra shift at the Leaky Cauldron, Remus would help out. When his dad died, Remus moved back home to keep his mother and the farm afloat. Every job he took was a short lived one, but it kept him fed and capable of doing the one job for Dumbledore he could during the war.
When the werewolves joined the Death Eaters, there was little shock throughout the Wizarding World. They were bloodthirsty creatures; it was only logical that they would fight for the side with the highest body count. Remus, however, wasn’t so eager to see his own kind be apart of such atrocities. When Remus asked Dumbledore for the mission, to infiltrate the werewolves and bring some back to their side, there was a small glint in Dumbledore’s eye. A glint that Remus had often felt exposed under, like Dumbledore knew of his real intention more that Remus did himself.
Considering himself the same as the werewolves who were shunned from ever going to Hogwarts, who were uneducated and feral, was his first mistake. They called him “pet” and he nearly died during their first full moon together, but Remus did make some connections. When he started speaking on behalf of Muggleborns and pushed for an educated structure for the younger werewolves, Remus met Fenrir Greyback.
As a pack leader, Greyback had showed very little interest in Remus but kept a close eye on him. Through a long series of events that Remus isn’t quick to relive or speak about, Greyback boasted that he was the one to make Remus the way he was. Greyback saw it fit to give him the same gift he gave the rest of the pack, it was just a shame that Remus was long gone when he came back to collect him the next morning. It wasn’t until Remus was face to face with the werewolf that changed him that he understood that he had been looking for him all along and that Dumbledore knew it when he asked for the mission.
Despite all that had happened, Remus continued to spend long periods of time with the werewolves. He missed attacks that were made and failed to attend the funerals of the fallen. Whenever he would spend time with Marlene, they would fight though she became more forgiving after her family died and Remus would hold her for long periods of time without asking questions. Tensions were high even with his best friends, but he couldn’t explain what he was doing. They would worry and disapprove and worse, they would try to convince him not to go back. That the werewolves he visited were somehow more dangerous than Remus himself.
The war was brutal and it felt as if every step forward they made there were at least a half dozen steps backward. Remus had very little to comfort himself with, but when the end seemed so far out of reach it came.
