SEVERUS TOBIAS SNAPE
Full Name: Severus Tobias Snape Nicknames: The Half-Blood Prince, Snivellus, Sev Date of Birth: 9 January 1960 Hometown: Cokeworth, England Parents' Names: Tobias (deceased) and Eileen Snape née Prince Other Family: None Blood Status: Half-Blood Occupation: Potions Master at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry Wand Type: 13 ½”, ebony with Dragon Heartstring core |
APPEARANCE
Hair:
Severus is known for his black, greasy hair. It was the subject of many taunts from a certain group of Gryffindors back in school, but he’s never attempted to fix the way it looks.
Eyes:
Dark brown, almost black
Height:
Severus is a 6' (1.83 m) and appears quite gaunt.
Style:
Coming from modest means, Severus only has second-hand clothes, bought a little large for him to “grow” into. He’s grown up but not out, so his clothes just tend to hang off of him, though his pants are often quite short at the ankle. Now that he works at Hogwarts, his robes are still black (practical for stains) but they tend to flow out which makes him look like a large bat.
Etc.:
A familiar joke about Severus is that his nose enters the room ten minutes before he does. It is his most distinguishing feature and often makes his greasy hair the second to be noticed. Adolescence has not been kind to Snape, leaving his skin greasy and pockmarked from acne. He looks smaller than he is because of his hunched posture and his large articles of clothing, but he is taken care of the best his mother can manage.
PERSONALITY
Erised:
To live a life not dictated by the Dark Lord or Albus Dumbledore.
Dementor:
Calling Lily Evans a mudblood.
Patronus:
Learning that the Dark Lord was defeated and that the Potters lived. It was the first time he felt free from Voldemort and Lily Evans.
Boggart:
Albus Dumbledore knows everything he has done, could destroy him with one letter to the Minister, and there is an unspoken threat that one day Severus will have to repay him.
Likes:
strong earl grey tea, smoking (cigarettes, pipe, cigar, other things), Potions, studying the Dark Arts, reading textbooks that can enhance his knowledge and classic literature, Quidditch, Black Sabbath, Led Zepplin, Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Budgie, Quartz, dark colored clothes, flying
Dislikes:
incompetence, stupidity, James Potter, Sirius Black, and their two lackeys, his father, disorder and chaos, rumors, pranks, students, foolishness
Basic Personality:
Severus has always kept mainly to himself. When he was sorted into Slytherin, he was met with a surprisingly warm reception and has always found himself at home amongst the group even after graduation. He is quite brilliant, but that doesn’t always earn him the respect he feels that he deserves, but he has always been willing to do anything to gain it. He never had many friends, but he also seeks out the isolation of his office rather than go to the teacher’s lounge for a biscuit.
Most people think of him as cold, sarcastic, and bitter, but they are all mechanisms to keep from revealing his insecurities and vulnerabilities. He likes Potions because it soothes him, speaking to his cool, calculating, and precise sensibilities. His students are just morons.
BIOGRAPHY
Severus Snape was raised in a brick row house on Spinner's End by a river, in a rundown area of an industrial city in northern England. His mother, who was a pureblood witch, and his father, who was a Muggle, lived there in bliss for the first few years of their marriage. It was a meager existence, but they were happy. The hardship between them only started when factories began shutting down and work became harder to find for Tobias.
Tobias felt that it was a man’s job to provide for his family and when he couldn’t, he drank and lashed out at his wife. Eileen, thinking that it might help fix their family, became pregnant with a son and it did work for a little while. They were happy until they realized things needed to be bought for the child. Cribs, diapers, extra food. The fighting and the arguing started back up and was a constant feature in Severus’ childhood. Tobias never tried to contain himself in front of his son, shouting at his wife and making snide comments and almost violent threats at Severus for causing so many problems.
Severus resented his father, hated him, and feared him. He made his mother tell him stories about Hogwarts and dreamed of a life away from home, away from his father. It wasn’t until he was nine years old that Severus began to enjoy life in Spinner’s End. That was when he met Lily, the first witch he met that wasn’t family and one that appeared quite talented. He made friends with her, told her about Hogwarts, and waited with her for two years until they got their letters.
At Hogwarts, they remained close though his relationship with Lily made him disliked by a particular group of Gryffindors. James Potter hated him because it seemed to Severus that they were in competition for her attention and Sirius Black went along with it because he lacked the ability to think without James. Pranks, taunts, vicious words bounced between Snape and James’ group of friends until it cumulated with James using his own spell against him to hold him upside down in front of the entire school. Severus pushed away Lily when she came to his aid that afternoon after their final O.W.L.s and called her a “Mudblood” in a fit of rage; they haven’t really spoken since.
The ties cut between him and Lily didn't put him off the radar of James Potter and his band of Gryffindors. When he returned to Slytherin, he was met with open arms and pity for going through such an ordeal and was championed for putting Evans in her place. His half-blood status is usually graciously ignored within his house because of his blatant dislike of Muggleborns that was displayed in front of the entire school. But the Gryffindors remembered their hatred of Severus Snape and at the end of their sixth year, Sirius had convinced Severus to go the Shrieking Shack one night during the full moon.
James saved Severus’ life that night and Severus has always been indebted to him.
After the incident at the end of their sixth year which resulted in a cover up that still makes Severus sick to think about, the war between Severus and the Gryffindors calmed down. They were far from friendly terms, but the year went by smoothly inside the walls as the war outside came closer.
The mysterious death of Severus’ father during the Christmas holidays in 1977 and the choices made during the Hogsmeade battle after Severus’ graduation in 1978 resulted in his acceptance into the Death Eaters by the end of the summer. Lucius Malfoy was the one who sponsored his nomination and saw to much of his training. He was a companion that Severus relied on from the first time he sat at the Slytherin table to the last mission the Dark Lord had sent them on.
In the summer of 1980, Severus applied for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts. The Dark Lord wanted him to get closer to Dumbledore, but when he arrived early to his interview, Severus heard a prophecy that would bring an end to the Dark Lord. The barkeep ended up throwing him out before he could have his interview and Severus went to the Dark Lord to warn him about what he had heard. He had no idea that it would mean putting Lily Potter in danger.
After Harry Potter was born, Dumbledore wrote Severus to reschedule the interview though Severus knew the conversation would have little to do with work. Dumbledore was the first to suggest that the Potters would be in danger if Voldemort knew of the prophecy, something Severus hadn’t considered. His contact with Lily was so strained that he didn’t even know she had been pregnant at the time he told Lord Voldemort about the prophecy. Voldemort himself confirmed Dumbledore’s suspicion about the Potters being in danger within a week.
Severus went back to Dumbledore and begged him to protect Lily. He offered his life, everything, for him to protect her and was reprimanded for his selfishness at not protecting her son or husband. But Dumbledore said he would protect them. Severus would have to work as a spy and work as the Potions Master at Hogwarts where he would never be out of Dumbledore’s sight.
Desperation made Severus agree, but he has felt trapped in the castle ever since. He hates teaching, but he is safe under Dumbledore’s influence now that the Dark Lord has fallen. When the Ministry tried to bring him in for questioning, Dumbledore was the one who kept him from Azkaban. Severus feels as if he was freed from one service to be thrown into the service of another powerful wizard, but he knows life at Hogwarts is better than the life he deserves at Azkaban.
